Adriana Abdenur is Co-President of the Global Fund for a New Economy (GFNE). Between 2023 and 2005 she was Special Advisor in international affairs in the office of President Lula. A Brazilian policymaker and scholar, she co-founded Plataforma CIPÓ, a think tank headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Abdenur earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has published widely on global governance and sustainable development. In August 2025, she was appointed to the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality.

Mr Akiwumi, a national of Ghana, joined UNCTAD in February 2017. Before being appointed as Director of ALDC, he served as Director of the Economic, Social and Development Affairs Unit in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). He and his team were responsible for advising the UN Secretary-General on the development pillar and supporting the activities of the UN's development-related departments, funds and programmes, fostering policy integration and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Istanbul Programme of Action, the Technology Bank for LDCs and the New Urban Agenda. Prior to this role, Mr Akiwumi held the position of Chief of Staff in the Office of the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, where he played a critical role in strengthening the development pillar in the Office of the Secretary General. Earlier in his career, Mr Akiwumi served with the United Nations Environment Programme, where he held the position of Chief of Staff, developing institutional policy, managing the action plans and conventions related to SIDS, Eastern and Western Africa, as well as the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. He also worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization, working on rural development projects, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa’s natural resources division. Mr Akiwumi has also served as Senior Advisor to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the GEF Council in Washington D.C.

She was a Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Climate Change and Biodiversity Scholar, and has been part of several UNEP GEOs, collaborated with the World Conservation Monitoring Center in Cambridge, UK, participated the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment, and was an expert in the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services-IPBES. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, 2004-2007
His Excellency Mr Shaukat Aziz was elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan and served from 2004-2007, following five years as Finance Minister from 1999. Mr Aziz was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan to complete a full term in office. His policies were based on the principals of liberalization, deregulation and privatization, accompanied by strong regulatory oversight. After graduating from Gordon College, Rawalpindi in 1967, Mr Aziz gained an MBA degree from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Karachi. An internship at Citibank marked the beginning of a 30-year career in global finance, encompassing roles in Pakistan, Greece, United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Philippines, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. As Executive Vice President, he held several senior management positions in Citibank including head of institutional banking for Central Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, then later for Asia Pacific, followed by Chief Executive of the bank's global wealth management business.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023, the first woman ever to head the organization. Ms Bogdan-Martin has held leadership positions in the field of international telecommunications policy for over two decades. As Director of ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau for a four-year term starting in 2018, she helped put sustainable digital development at the forefront of international cooperation, including with the private sector and civil society. She actively promoted the Partner2Connect initiative, which has mobilized unprecedented pledges of funding and support for meaningful Internet connectivity in developing countries. She was instrumental in establishing the ITU-UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development; contributed to the success of ITU's Global Symposium for Regulators as the pre-eminent worldwide meeting for digital policy makers; and led ITU's youth engagement strategy. She also pioneered ITU's ongoing contribution to the EQUALS Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age and initiated ITU's collaboration with UNICEF on the Giga project to connect every school worldwide to the Internet. Within ITU, she has promoted gender equality and encouraged bringing more women into the workforce, as well as helping women grow professionally and contributing to networks of women pursuing gender-balanced participation in conferences and policy making. Before joining ITU in 1994, she worked at the US Department of Commerce as a Telecommunication Policy Specialist.

Mike Davis became Global Witness’s CEO in February 2020. This followed three years in the role of Director of Campaigns, Planning and Evaluation, during which he oversaw the development of a new Global Witness strategy with a strong emphasis on abuses of power and money driving climate crisis. From 2013 to the end of 2016, Mike was Global Witness’s Asia Director. In this role he oversaw the organisation’s work in China and conducted in-depth investigations into corruption in Myanmar’s multi-billion dollar jade business; writing a series of high impact publications that exposed, for the first time, the generals, drug lords and tycoons involved. Mike’s previous roles at Global Witness include managing the organisation’s work on forest protection and land rights across Africa, Asia and Latin America from 2012-2013, and leading its campaigns on conflict minerals, blood diamonds and other conflict resources in sub-Saharan Africa from 2007-2012. He ran the Global Witness office and its team of undercover investigators in Cambodia from 2003-2005 and wrote two ground-breaking exposés on high level corruption in the country which were both banned by the Cambodian government.

She holds a PhD in Political Science from Yale University, a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Carleton University, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from El Colegio de México.

Mme Bineta Diop became the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security in 2014. She holds a post-graduate degree in Development Cooperation from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

CEO and Founder, Safe Hands for Girls; UN Women Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa
Renowned activist Jaha Dukureh was designated Regional UN Women Ambassador for Africa in February 2018. Herself a survivor of FGM, and forced into child marriage at age 15, Ms Dukureh dedicates her efforts to support UN Women’s advocacy to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage in Africa, with focus on mobilizing youth, promoting their leadership voice and the development of sustainable livelihoods. Ms Dukureh is the CEO and Founder of the NGO “Safe Hands for Girls” that provides support to African women and girls who are survivors of FGM and addresses its lifelong, harmful physical and psychological consequences. Alongside women’s organizations and civil society, she contributed to the Gambian Government’s ban on FGM after youth mobilization and campaigning in the country and has been a leading voice in maintaining it in force in the face of a proposed repeal. She is the recipient of multiple global awards.

From Brussels, he oversees the IRC’s work in offices in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and Switzerland where he engages in high-level advocacy in Europe on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable. Prior to joining the IRC, he was the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media from 2017 to 2020. In 1984, Désir co-founded the French not-for-profit association SOS Racisme with the mission to fight against racism, anti-Semitism, and all other forms of discrimination.

Director, Ecosystems Division, UN Environment Programme
Dr Susan Gardner is Director of the Ecosystems Division of the UN Environment Programme where she leads global programmes to promote nature-based solutions for sustainable development, including for food systems transformation, climate resilience, global biodiversity protection and disaster risk reduction. Her work on combating ocean pollution included leading the process that achieved a global agreement to negotiate a treaty to end plastic pollution. She has three decades of experience in international environmental policy working for both the Mexican and United States governments, including as a senior official in the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Deputy Director of the US Department of State’s Office of Science and Technology Cooperation, and as an environmental scientist at the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste. In these positions Dr Gardner’s work has advanced women and girls in science and established the ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women. Based on her contributions to the Global Mercury Partnership and the Minamata Convention, she was awarded the Gold Medal for Exceptional Services from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the highest national honor award this agency bestows. Her research has generated over 30 publications including a book and book chapters on topics related to natural resource management and sustainable development.

Patrick Guillaumont is the Président of the Fondation pour les Etudes et Recherches sur le Développement International (FERDI), he founded in 2003. He is emeritus professor at the University of Clermont Auvergne. He aso fouded CERDI (Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches sur le Développement International) and the Revue d'Economie du Développement. He was a member of the UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) from 1987 to 2009, where he chaired various working groups on the identification of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). He has worked for many international institutions and foreign governments and has published more than twenty books and 200 articles, mainly on development, many papers published in major developmen journals. His recent work is mainly about the allocation of official development assistance and vulnerabilities. His latest books include Out of the trap. Supporting the least developed countries 2019, Measuring vulnerabilities to improve aid allocation, especially in Africa (2020) and the works quoted in the text.

Estherine Lisinge-Fotabong is the Director of Programme Innovation and Planning at the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD). She received an award of recognition from the Government of Egypt in February 2020, for her support to Africa’s development and women's empowerment. Before her appointment as Director at the AUDA-NEPAD, Mrs Fotabong was the UNEP Country Liaison Officer for South Africa and the Senior Environment and Tourism Adviser to the NEPAD Secretariat.

Eduardo Mansur started his career in 1981 as Researcher (Silviculture) in a collaborative programme of the Federal University of Paraná and the Eduardo Mondlane University of Mozambique. He worked as Project Officer in Mozambique and Ecuador, and served, from 1995 to 1996, as Regional Forest Conservation Officer for South America with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mr Mansur joined FAO in May 1997 as Chief Technical Adviser in the FAO Representation in Mozambique. In 2002, he came to headquarters as Project Coordinator and then served as Forest Officer with the Forestry Economics and Policy Division. From 2007 to 2008, he worked as Senior Forestry Officer at the Regional Office for Africa in Accra, Ghana. In 2008, he served as Assistant Director with the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) in Japan. In 2012, Mr Mansur re-joined FAO as Director of the Forest Assessment, Management and Conservation Division, and, in 2016, he was nominated Director of the Land and Water Division.

In addition, he was part of the FAO Task Force for the formulation of the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy 2040 of Oman and he also participated in the FAO Al-Ghab Development Programme in Syria.

Gerd Müller was appointed Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on 10 December 2021. He has many years of experience in the fields of multilateral cooperation, sustainability and innovative agriculture. Furthermore, he is a strong advocate of fair trade, and initiated legislation in Germany and the European Union on social and environmental standards along supply chains. Between 1980 and 1989, he was a teacher at vocational schools and a civil servant at the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. From 1989 to 1994, he served as a Member of the European Parliament, during which time he was a member of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. Between 1994 and 2021, he served as a Member of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany, and as a member of the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. In 2005, he was appointed Deputy Minister at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, in charge of international relations, development projects and world food affairs. In 2013, he was appointed Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, a position he held until 2021.

Anisha Nazareth is an Associate Scientist with the Equitable Transitions program. Most of her work focuses on the interactions between climate crises and global and local inequalities. She uses political ecology, political economy and critical climate justice framings to understand the power dynamics that create and maintain injustices in climate governance and climate action. Anisha has contributed to SEI’s work on carbon inequality, exploring how different income groups make starkly different contributions to global carbon emissions. Carlos Nobre is an Earth System scientist from Brazil, currently associated with Institute for Advanced Studies, USP. Nobre’s work mostly focuses on the Amazon and its impacts on the Earth system. He chaired the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). He has been author of several IPCC reports, including the 2007 report that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was director of Center of Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC-INPE), and the creator of Center for Earth System Science (CCST-INPE) and of the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN). He was National Secretary for R&D Policies at Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation and President of Brazil’s Agency for Post-Graduate Education (CAPES). He is co-chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon and the director of the Amazonia 4.0 project to promote a standing forest bioeconomy for the Amazon. He was International Secretary of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He is a foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, and full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences.

Professor Johan Rockström is an internationally recognized scientist on global sustainability issues. He led the development of the Planetary Boundaries framework for human development in the current era of rapid global change. He is a leading scientist on global water resources, with more than 25 years experience in applied water research in tropical regions, and more than 150 research publications in fields ranging from applied land and water management to global sustainability. Rockström is active as a consultant for several governments and business networks. He also acts as an advisor for sustainable development issues at international meetings, including the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences (UNFCCC).

Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
Ibrahim Thiaw of Mauritania was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General as Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) on 31 January 2019. Mr Thiaw brings to the position almost 40 years of experience in sustainable development, environmental governance, and natural resource management. In 2018, he was Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for the Sahel. Prior to this position, he served as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he played a key role in shaping the organization's strategic vision and mandate. Mr Thiaw joined the United Nations in 2007 as Director of UNEP’s Division for Environmental Policy Implementation. Before joining the Organization, he was the Regional Director for West Africa, and later Acting Director General, of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Helena is commissioner of the Spanish Financial Markets Authority (CNMV) and Chair of the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance. She is also a member of the EIB´s Climate and Environment Advisory Council and formerly of the UN Secretary-General High-Level Expert Group on Net Zero Pledges. Helena was co-rapporteur of the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance (2020-2022) and had previously been a member of the Technical Expert Group on Sustainable Finance. Prior to the CNMV, Helena was Senior Policy Adviser on Sustainable Finance for BNP Paribas and Global Head of Stewardship and Policy for BNP Paribas Asset Management. She was a board member of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), a member of the AMF Comite de Climat et Finance Durable and represented BNPP AM in the EFAMA committee on Stewardship and ESG. She sat on a number of additional committees, including the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Green Finance Advisory Group, PRI Policy Reference Group and the Technical Advisory Group of the LSE-led Transition Pathway Initiative. Previously, Helena led Oxfam's advocacy work on responsible investment and engagement with institutional investors in support of poverty reduction. She is the author of numerous papers and articles, book chapters and a book. She earned a BA in Economics and a postgraduate in Latin American Economics from the University of Barcelona (Spain), followed by an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Catherine possesses more than 15 years’ experience working on climate change and the environment at headquarters and in the field. She is UNDP’s focal point on the Climate Security Mechanism and the UN Water-led core group on Leveraging Water for Peace. Catherine was recognised as one of 25 Young Leaders by the Government of Germany, Körber-Stiftung and the Munich Security Conference (2021–22), and is an observer of the International Military Council for Climate and Security.
