Rebeca Grynspan

Secretary-General, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

Rebeca Grynspan, of Costa Rica, is the first woman and Central American to be appointed as UNCTAD’s secretary-general. She is an economist and was formerly Ibero-American secretary-general. Ms Grynspan's career spans many years, during which she has held several high-level positions including, among others, former under secretary-general of the UN and associate administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP). She has also served as UNDP’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, been a member of the High-level Panel on Financing for Development, and was vice president of Costa Rica (1994 to 1998).
