Dr Joanne Raisin brings over 25 years of humanitarian and development experience to the SUN Director role, including more than two decades with the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and its successor, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Her work has spanned a broad range of food security and nutrition agendas. She has led food and nutrition programmes, policy reforms, and advocacy in fragile, humanitarian, and development contexts, with field experience in Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Zambia, and Malawi. Most recently, she headed the UK’s humanitarian, food and nutrition security, and human rights portfolio in Myanmar, where she championed nutrition and supported platforms for local leadership.
An early pioneer of cash transfer and safety net programmes across Africa and Asia, she has consistently sought to leverage these approaches for stronger nutrition outcomes. Throughout her career, she has worked with governments, the UN, civil society, and the private sector to mobilize greater focus and financing for nutrition, while promoting national ownership of food and nutrition security.
She holds a PhD in famine studies and a Bachelor’s degree in Development from the University of Bradford’s School of Peace Studies.
